FORWARD DANCE COMPANY will offer a glimpse into its current production at TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ in Chemnitz. Choreographed by Ofra Idel, a trio of dancers explores the tension between power, responsibility, and collective through dance.
Power – how much responsibility does it entail, how much care does it demand? Taking as its starting point the image of the quadriga, the Roman chariot that became a symbol of power and dominion over the centuries and remains visible to this day on the Brandenburger Tor, the new production by FORWARD DANCE COMPANY by LOFFT – DAS THEATER explores the relationships between power, responsibility and community.
The dancers’ bodies sit firmly in the saddle on a journey into the unknown. As a trio, they navigate the tensions between cooperation and dominance, care and dependence. What implicit power dynamics arise in the act of caring for one another? How fluid is the boundary between care and the exercise of power?
Amidst crutches and fences, amidst boundaries that are repeatedly erected and breached, a landscape of fragility unfolds. It is the melancholy of a shattered dream, of a reality in ruins. Yet from these ruins, new possibilities emerge: deconstruction becomes the prerequisite for reconstruction.
The choreography by Ofra Idel of the Machol Shalem Dance House (MASH) in Jerusalem, created under the artistic direction of Gustavo Fijalkow, seeks images of a future built on solidarity: chairs that, in the game ‘Musical Chairs’ (german: “Reise nach Jerusalem”) do not disappear to exclude anyone, but multiply to make room for everyone. A utopia based not on competition, but on mutual support. Set against the backdrop of the collapse of old power structures and the search for a new beginning, the work explores how strength can emerge precisely from fragility.
